Why do my toes / upper half of my foot go numb when I workout on the elliptical trainer?

My toes start to go numb after about 17 minutes. My shoes are not too tight, and my circulation is good-I can feel my pedal pulses.

I don't think it's that your shoes are too small or anything - they just don't fit right. You probably have a high arch, and your shoes cut across at the wrong place. It's made worse on an elliptical because you're driving your feet forward and down and forcing your feet further into your shoes as they grip the pedals.

Try lacing your shoes up differently. There are a couple of websites linked below that may help:
Reply:I didn't think that lacing your shoes differently would do anything, but I'm a believer now! I tried lacing my shoes as Elizabeth suggested and it worked. I worked out on the elliptical for 30 minutes yesterday and my feet weren't hurting at all! Report It

Reply:Which way did you lace them up Leslie? Report It

Reply:maybe because your straining it er something, try to lighten the pressure on your foot...
Reply:Try wiggling your toes a little bit every minute or so, or distribute your weight back to your heels (this actually slightly changes the muscles you're working). Does it happen when you go in reverse? If it continues to happen check with a trainer or doctor.
Reply:don't stand on your toes when you do it. stay flat on your foot so your weight is distributed evenly through it.
